Newark is the largest city in New Jersey and the seat of Essex County. A major U.S. hub for air travel, shipping, and rail, it had a population of 282,090 in 2018, ranking as the nation’s 73rd-most populous municipality. Newark Liberty International Airport, the first municipal commercial airport in the country, remains one of the nation’s busiest. Newark is home to the headquarters of several major companies, including Prudential, PSEG, Panasonic Corporation of North America, Audible.com, IDT Corporation, and Manischewitz. The city is also an important center for higher education, hosting Rutgers University–Newark (including its law and medical schools and the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies), the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Seton Hall University School of Law. The U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey is based in the city as well. Cultural landmarks include the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark Symphony Hall, the Prudential Center, and The Newark Museum of Art.
