Burgos Spain

Peaceful and traditional, Burgos is home to one of Spain's most stunning cathedrals and is linked with El Cid, the real-life epic hero of Castile. Known as the liberator of Valencia from the Moors, El Cid is commemorated with a massive statue in a square named after him, La Plaza del Mio Cid. The iconic landmark of Burgos will always be its cathedral, the third largest in Spain and a grand Gothic structure crowned with two intricate stone spires. Constructed between the 13th and 15th centuries, it showcases exceptional Gothic and Plateresque architecture and artwork. The Capilla mayor, located in the heart of the church, houses the tombs of El Cid and his wife, while the famous Cofre del Cid, the box where his remains were discovered, is displayed on a side wall. Just a few steps across Plaza de Santa Maria, a gateway to the walled city was built and later adorned with the busts of Burgos's favorites, Emperor Charles V and El Cid. Burgos also prides itself on being one of the most authentically Castilian cities in Spain.
